Keep Your Home Safe While On Vacation
Learning some travel tips can make a difference when you decide to go on vacation. Did you know
that most home burglaries occur during the busy vacation months?
When you are on the beach in Aruba, the last thing you want haunting your mind is the safety of your home and
belongings. There are a few simple steps you can take to help make sure your home stays safe when you go on
vacation.
First of all, be careful who you tell about your vacation. No one needs to know about your trip
until you get back home. For instance, don't post Tweets from Disney World because that's the same as announcing to
the world your home is vacant. Remind your kids not to tell everyone at school the family will be gone for an
extended time.
It's a good idea to become great friends with your neighbors for times like this. Ask them to watch over your home
while you are gone. They can do things like pick up flyers, papers, and packages that land on your porch. They can
set your trash can out so it looks like you are home on trash day. Ask your neighbor to park his car in your
driveway occasionally and maybe even switch lights on and off at night.
Your neighbor doesn't have to do all the work though. You can do many things yourself like suspend the delivery
of your newspapers and mail. Look into putting your lights on timers so they turn off at varying times of the
evening and night. Leave a TV on so it sounds like people are inside your home.
If you don't have close neighbors, consider hiring a house sitter to stop by your home each morning and evening so
there is activity around your home each day. She can bring in mail, turn lights on, and keep an eye on your home
while you are gone. You can hire someone to stay in your home the entire time or just drop by for a few hours each
day.
Before you leave, take a look at your home with a fresh set of eyes. Look for areas where intruders could hide or
where they could easily gain entry to your home. Put in strong deadbolts and make sure your garage is securely
locked. Install motion detection lighting to frighten away anyone who approaches your home at night.
Give yourself peace of mind by installing a home security system that includes smoke and water alarms. That way, in
case a water pipe breaks or a fire breaks out, the alarm can call for help right away. A good alarm system can
thwart a robbery attempt in progress and deter criminals.
When you go away on vacation, you want your home to look lived in so it doesn't attract the attention of a
potential burglar. It doesn't require a whole lot of effort to keep your property safe while you are away but it
will ease your mind so you can relax and have a great time.
