Know These Important Home Safety Tips
Your home is one of your largest investments so you want to protect it from harm. Even more importantly, you want
to keep your family members safe from danger. To do that, you need to have a good home security system in place and
practice home safety. Here are a few home safety tips you might want to think about.
Fire Safety
Develop a family fire escape plan and practice regularly so each member knows what to do if a fire breaks out.
Practice escaping from each room and designate a meeting place so everyone can reunite away from the house. Install
the appropriate number of smoke alarms for the size of your home and test the alarms monthly. Replace the batteries
one a year on a certain date like your birthday or when the time changes to daylight savings. Keep a fire
extinguisher in your home and teach all family members how to use it properly. Be careful with electrical outlets.
Don't overload them or use bulbs that exceed the recommended wattage. Don't leave home with appliances, like the
dryer, still running.
Carbon Monoxide Safety
Install a carbon monoxide alarm in your home. If sleeping areas are far apart, install one outside each area. Check
the functioning of the alarm at least once a month and change the batteries once yearly when you change the
batteries in the smoke detector.
Learn the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning such as headache, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, and confusion.
If you or a family member experiences these symptoms, leave your home and call for help. Never operate portable
generators inside of your home or garage. Don't run your car in the garage for more than a couple of minutes.
Ensure your appliances are vented to the outdoors and that there is adequate circulation of fresh air in your
home.
Personal Safety
Take a CPR class and learn first aid so you are prepared to deal with any emergencies that happen around your home.
Put 911 on speed dial along with the Poison Control number and your doctor. Make it easy to get help fast when an
emergency strikes as you might not think clearly under stress. Give your home a safety inspection and change
anything that might pose a hazard.
For example, store medicine and cleaning supplies away from food, put non skid rubber backing on rugs and bathtub
mats, and set your water heater at a moderate level to avoid burns. In addition, install strong locks on doors and
windows and keep them locked even when you are at home. If you have small children, keep household chemicals in a
locked cabinet. Always turn pot handles away from the edge of the stove and don't leave your kids unattended in the
kitchen at any time.
Keeping your kids safe is a top priority. Accidents can happen in an instant and are usually unexpected. You can
reduce the risk of danger by following a few home safety tips that will prevent accidents and prepare you for
dealing with them when they do occur.
